Advices and Queries
The little red book Advices
and
Queries is published separately from the big red book Quaker
Faith
&
Practice but the text is also included in QF&P.
Background: Since the 1700s
London (now Britain) Yearly Meeting asked local meetings questions
about their activities; and later included advice about ensuring
consistency of conduct among Friends. After revisions and extensions
every 20 to 40 years the
present text was approved in
1994.
The Introduction explains:
Advices and queries
are not a
call to increased activity by each
individual Friend but a reminder of the insights of the Society.
and also (from a group of elders in 1656):
"Dearly
beloved
Friends, these things we do not lay upon you as a rule
or form to walk by, but that all, with the measure of light which is
pure and holy, may be guided; and so in the light walking and abiding,
these may be fulfilled in the Spirit, not from the letter, for the
letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life."
